Brainbenders

I will post a brainbender in here sometimes for a bit of fun and you can solve it if you wish. Today's:

A,E,F,H,I,K,L,M,N,T,V,W,X,Y,Z

___________________________________________________

B,C,D,G,J,O,P,Q,R,S,U

These letters are sorted in two groups by similarity. But what is the similarity?

Oh and feel free to post your own brainbenders!

A new brainbender! This one might give you a headache:

Using only nines, make a math equation that equals 100 (you can have number like 99, 999, 9,999 as long as it's all nines)!

(9999-99)/99=100

A classic math puzzle (as the subject shows):

USA+USSR=PEACE

Replace each letter with a number.

emoticon Yes! I was thinking 99 + (99÷99) = 100, but we're both right!

I'm getting 32?

USA+USSR=PEACE isn't as hard as it looks.

Step #1: since USA is 3-digit number and USSR 4-digit, both are <10000 so their sum is <20000 (or infact <11000, as USA<1000), thus 5-digit PEACE must begin with 1; P=1

Alright - you got it right! emoticon

Speaking of getting things right I just might have solved your bender:

Step 1: The P has to be 1 since that's the most you can carry over from U in this problem.

Step 2: U has to be 9 because the answer has five digits and it's three digits plus four digits.

Step 3: This means E is 0.

Step 4: With the knowledge that E's 0 you can try substituting different pairs for A and R (2+8, 3+7, 4+6 and the same ones the other way; can't be 1+9 since they're already used) and test to see if the A digit will work in "PEACE".

Step 5: You have 2+8 so the A in "PEACE" is also 2.

Step 6: In the third column to the right you fill in what 9+__=2, you get 3.

Step 7: That solves for all S's so fill in each one.

Step 8: The answer to 1+3+3 is 7 so C's 7.

So it's:

  932
 9338
______
10270

 emoticon

New problems:

I have new problems.

I go to the movies but get there late and miss a fourth of the movie. If I'd gotten there fifteen minutes earlier I'd have missed an eighth of the movie. How long is the movie?

I buy carrots and sell them for half the price I bought them for plus $10. I profit four dollars. How much did I buy the carrots for?

X=8*15min=2h

X+4$=X/2+10$
X/2=6$
X=12$

Riddle: In a mansion, a husband is found dead in bed, with a knife in his throat. His wife says she was asleep and that the gardener was outside trimming their hedge, the maid was folding clothes and the chef was busy baking cheesecake. Who is guilty? Why?

Well... umm... he was entered into a baking contest that afternoon and was a procrastinator. Or something.

Good guess but the answer is the wife because she couldn't know what the others were doing if she was really alseep!
