With out a doubt there are boards out there on the various Message Board Systems which have people running a board who really don't know the first thing about properly running a board.

My pet hate is a new member pretending to join my board just to spam their own board. It's so annoying.

Whilst on this topic, there's a lot of that here, I see. You really should do something about that. emoticon emoticon

Re: what IRKS you on a message board?

This has nothing to do with runboard, but another board. What kept irking me about this board, was that since it was a Touched By An Angel board, God and angels go hand-in-hand, because they are His creations...

One of the mods there, unfortunately, worked for the/or with the ACLU (Anti-Christ Liberties Union, I call 'em)...got on our case for mentioning God, and His Son, Jesus, on the Off Topic forum. Martha Williamson, the series Executive Producer, specifically said that her show is *all* about God, and His angels; Monica, Tess, Andrew & Gloria. Infact, one of the most famous lines the TBAA angels used, was--God loves you more than you can ever imagine! We posters presumed that His Son also was welcome there too, which she adamantly disagreed, due to her ties to the ACLU.

For our efforts to wholly disagree with her, she gave us fair warning that if we kept mentioning Jesus, that we would get banned.

So therefore--I ask you, if you ran such a board about angels, would you ban mention of their Creator and His Son?

I thought the ACLU stood for American Civil Liberties Union?

Many of us Christians feel that since they're true agenda is out to destroy and erase the way our country was founded on by our Christian Heritage...they deserve to be called Anti-Christ/Anti-Christian Liberties Union instead.

What irks me on message boards is when trigger happy mods indiscriminately close threads for no good reason (mostly because they disagree with what is being said, even if the argument is entirely civil and non-abusive). It's easy to win an argument by refusing to let anyone have their say.

Always be extremely careful when appointing mods or admin on your board. So many people go right over the top at the first sniff of power.

No, not necessarily, JJ...it is more like--If the shoe fits, then they (the UCLU) should wear it. And I *am* against everything they stand for too, because they certainly do not represent me!

Hopefully people designing boards will read this thread and take some of the points on board.

If a board is too difficult to read I don't return to it (I saw one recently with no dividers between posts and every poster having a big picture sig - I couldn't even find some of the replies!)

Like some others here I also dislike unasked for music on websites - I consider it violation of my personal privacy.

If a board is hard to read (i.e overly colourful or font that clashes with a background) i tend to say clear.

But I mainly visit boards for content; somewhere that offers something a little different.

I also read about Restricted areas. I think they, if used in the right way, can encourage members to post, and also serve a purpose.

For example an area for Mods and Admins to talk about members, not in a derogatory way, but merely to perhaps avoid conflicts before they start and it is the place i use for competition voting etc.

I would also say areas that reward members for contributing to a board, makes them feel “special” once they get access. Obviously also as was previously mentioned places for writers to showcase work without work being null-a-void because it’s been posted publicly before.

I personally don't like restricted sections at all, but particularly when they aren't noted as such in the description. There's nothing more off putting than to keep getting Sorry, no access messages. I would usually not bother returning to a board like that. In my experience, having restricted areas is far more likely to deter people from joining than the opposite.

My own feeling is that the world is full of pointless red tape, restrictive rules and needless bureaucracy already, so why add to it.

We have a mods area, it's where we discuss the board layout and topics etc. But it's hidden - if others have no access why do they need to see it?

That's a very good point above.

What about restricted areas, for places for members to post photos? Would you want them sorts of thread visible to all visitors to the board? OK it's not hard to join a board and then see inside a restricted thread that requires only to post to gain access, but it's a restricted area with a purpose.

To be honest I can only go with the experience of FWU, but many members posted more, or have openly said they remained active to see what the V.I.P restricted areas harboured (oh how they were disappointed lol) and obviously I have no frame of reference towards how many potential members this distracted so can’t really weigh up the pros and cons, however I will say they are additional forums where a little bit more is aloud to go. Thus I think they have a purpose because members, who have built up some semblance of trust (as much as you can trust somebody over the internet) can go let their hair down and then push the boundaries a little bit further.

Again going by FWU as an example, the forum is open to all, it’s a 13+ forum and we welcome young and old to share all manor of writing/reading/art and life experiences with each other, then you have a core set of members who want to discuss things perhaps not suitable for 13/14/15year olds, so I think a restricted area is the way to go. Everybody has access to the board, all it’s topics and posts, but additional areas of the forum are set aside for other purposes. I think the key word is additional, if you make the forums as an extra to what the board has to offer as a whole.

i like restricted areas if you can get to them by posts or other things but not restricted that you can not get into they are pointless. i get irked but boards that do not welcome or are funny to new members or make you feel unwelcome.
