Hannah Steenbock's Forum

This is the board for the German writer Hannah Steenbock. It's currently mostly in German (with an English-language lounge), but that will change shortly, as she intends to turn it into a bilingual board.

If you're interested in writing or talking to Hannah, just pop over to ]Hannah Steenbock's Forum.

How? I'm thinking of replacing the layout with something more white and blue, and adding a new banner.

Then I'll set about making an English section of forums, and finally I'll turn the language set to bilingual, German and English. I may have to make buttons for that, too.

It's a bit of work, and it won't happen very soon, but I'm already trying to work out how I want things to look like...

I was too rash. Today, I got bit by the layout bug, and I got a totally new look for my site.

The bilingual stuff and reshuffling of topics will come a bit later, though.

Reshuffling is done, as well.

The only thing remaining is the language set, and that's going to be hard. I might have to design lots of buttons and find short urls for them.

Thanks, Panther. emoticon

I finally bashed my graphics program into submission, and now I can make images for seperators, at least.

Phew! emoticon

Wow, that's quite an overhaul to the old look.

Over at [sign in to see URL], we have some multilingual items in the language set, too. Currently, they animate, cycling through text in various languages because there just isn't enough space to display text in all four languages on the board all the time. But I've gotten a lot of complaints about that animation strategy.

So, one of my projects is to replace the language set with images of text in each language. My web server can then serve out an appropriate, language-specific image automatically by looking at each the language preferences users have configured into their browsers. That way, someone who prefers reading the web in English will get an English-only language set, and someone who prefers reading in, for example, Japanese, gets a Japanese language set.

(The automatic language choosing is built into most web servers now and is the same technology I plan to use for the multilingual Runboard registration page project.)

Re: Hannah Steenbock's Forum

I'm not very happy with the automatic language recognition some pages have.

For example, I can't convince google to give me pages in English unless I use specific search words. It always "assumes" that since my browser is set to German, I want only German.

I'm planning on making buttons for some parts of the language set that would take up too much room with the words from both languages spelled out.

I'll see how it goes, but it should be easier than for you, with the many languages you cater for.

Yeah, I guess I should put up a notice that the English section is below the German one.

Thanks to a talented artist friend of a friend, I now have new buttons on the board.

Not everything is done just yet, but now you'll see a beautiful row of buttons in each post instead of some German gibberish.

I gave the board a good workover today, and condensed several forums.

I hope that the English Section is more readily available now, even though it sits below the German one. Feel welcome to ask questions and add comments.
