Promoting your message board

The essential ingredient to a forum is getting people to visit.(Getting hits/traffic/visitors/pageviews etc) This FAQ has many useful ways in which to increase the number of visitors to your site.

1. Search Engine Submissions
People need to find your forum and so you need promote your forum with search engines.

There are tonnes of search engines. The most popular and famous being Google and Yahoo. However rather than sign up to each one individually there are several providers who will in one sign up, submit your forum details to many search engines.

These are:
Add-Url-Free - Submits to 50 search engines/spiders & webcrawlers for Free.
SubmitExpress - Submits to 40 Top search engines for Free.
AddMe - Submits to 14 search engines for Free but Requires AddMe Return Link.
AddPro - Submits to 20+ search engines for Free.

It is important when you signup to these that you use good keywords that are relevant and likely to be searched for by people. Runboard allows you to have these in your pages which is important for Search engines like google which index all the words on your pages.
Add/Edit keywords via Control Panel > Manage > Edit Keywords/Description

So for example, if your forum is about Star Wars some good keywords would be
Stars Wars, Jedi, The Force, Luke, Skywalker, Darth, Vader, LightSaber, George Lucas, Episode I, Episode II.

2. Link To Your Forum In Your Sig
A lot of people may find your board by accident by including a link in your sig.
You can do this on Runboard as well as any other forums that you visit (providing it is allowed)

Note: On Runboard forums use of Html is disallowed in sigs so you have to do it in BB code like this.
[url=http://www.runboard.com/bakheva]Runboard Support Forums[/url]

You can also use an image which when clicked will go to your forums.
For Runboard forums an image in the signature is done in BB code like this.
[url=http://www.runboard.com/bakheva][img]http://www.mywebspace.com/myimage.jpg[/img][/url]

NOTE: Runboard does not provide image hosting. You will have to find a 3rd party provider.

3. Promotion In Dedicated Advertisement Forums
Some boards have a specific forum for SPAM (synically advertise) your forum in the hope of attracting visitors.

The Runboard Directory (Official) is for the Runboard Community to post adverts for their boards at a central, easy to find location

4. Topsite Lists
These are a very good way to attract traffic to your site. You add your link to the list. Place the button on your website which visitors click to Vote for your vote. The more clicks the higher you get on the list. The higher on the list the more likely people will visit you. You can join existing ones or even create your own.
See 3rd party sites which provide Top Sites lists such as
http://www.ultimatetopsites.com/

5. Affiliate
A good way for new sites to get some traffic is to affiliate with other websites/boards which have a similar subject. The way affiliation works in that you put a link/banner to their site on your board and request that they put one back to yours.

Where can you find affiliates?
Try a google search using similar keywords as your site, see what sites are found. Those are the sites you may want to target for affiliation. Or you could find other Runboards to affiliate with via RunSearch

6. RunSearch
All Runboards can be found in the RunSearch.net search engine/directory of runboard message boards. New boards are added on a regular basis. But if you can't wait you can always submit it to runsearch

7. Join a Web-Ring
Web-Rings combine the Topsite List with the Affiliate concept which allows both you and others to benefit from the promotional efforts of the whole group. By placing a small bit of code on your site you provide a direct gateway to all the other boards in your ring allowing others to find each other (and your own board) quickly and easily.

Note: Items 1-6 were originally posted by Smackdown5 in 2003. The links have been updated and are the only bits I can take the credit (or blame) for...

Is the Runboard Web-Ring still active?
I decided to join with my Bible Notes board. It was fairly easy to insert the code on my board, although it is in table form.

Also, in reference to submitting one's board to the various search engines, I wonder how useful that advice still is -- just inquiring, because I have no idea myself. The reason I ask is that I have found some boards where I have admin status showing up in Google searches I do without having to submit them. I am guessing that Runboard is prominent enough that Google already seeks out some of the more active boards.... OR, is there something already in place at Runboard which submits the key words and description (and etc.?) of boards here?

Re:

A long time ago, I did submit my board to the search engines. However, now, I think the web crawlers look at the keywords from the boards and also pages on the boards. I know that they crawl all of the public boards on Runboard.

I do not think that the web ring is still active. Perhaps if there is interest shown, Pastor Rick might revive it. He will need to speak about this, though.

Hi,

The submission to the search engines is still a good idea but they only help people find your board if they are looking for it so "word of mouth" and "invitation to visit" are still the most important.

The web-ring died because of hackers a couple of years ago. I think about bringing it back on occasion but I have not seen a web-ring software package that is secure against the hacking problem exploited back then.
