Maybe you can put up a click here etc link on top of the board, that will lead to the specified thread, so they can just click and post to say 'I was here for this event'

That would be 6am in California and midnight in Sydney, although it would be a bit more like 11pm since their time goes back an hour, later that same night.
That would also be 9am for me, and although I don't usually get up until 10 or 11 on Saturdays, I'll try to drag myself out of bed for it.

That wouldn't work. Runboard only knows when you load a page. It doesn't know how long you keep it open. If you sit on a page for more than 15 minutes (the amount of time TRD's who's online is set for) without reloading, your name will disappear from the who's online.
