Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! May 7 marks the end of the first week in the games first beta-test. The players have both found and offered fixes for some of the game mechanic bugs. One suggestion is more use of the "clickable smilies" as a game turn posting aid which I am working on now.

if... everything goes well the 2nd beta-test will start sometime in June...
Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! And a nice "proof of concept" exercise as well. I am discovering the limits of what can be done with nothing but Runboard and a picture host as resources and it turns out that it is both more and less than what I actually expected.
I want more players in the 2nd beta-test game to see how well the system holds up.
Re: I have run some rather extensive games in my OW-WHQ board (here at Runboard). I found it fairly amazing what could be done, providing several links in main game posts and information forums. I was beginning to work with using an html table, hosted on my own website to make moving things around on a map (dungeon crawling) much less image editing work. This way, I could move image objects in Frontpage and then take a screenshot to post in the main game forum post. Then, I was going to make that image link to the actual table on my sight so that players could "zoom in" on the graphics with tooltips on the image objects. BUT, that was experimental, and I had not yet implemented it when I was able to migrate my games back to a re-opened private site that uses frames, a game database, and tons of special code.
Next, I need to learn how to code more than just basic html.
Back to your game idea, I like the fact that a player can upload to an image hosting site right there from within your board. Is that what is called a widget?

Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! The folks at the image host call it a "developer tool" but I call it a widget. Lesigner Girl is the one who actually figured out how to make the coding work on Runboard. It isn't hard to do now that she explained it to me.
Re: I'm having fun with it. You have done an amazing job on it.
One suggestion might be a rule book, or instructions. For situations like now where I made a guess only, and no one could dispute it. I was not making a formal declaration and in a case like that I shouldn't have to show a card. Fortunately Warrior made the same guess.

I agree that a rule book would be great -- or a game rules post. However, I assume in part that some of the rules are not totally nailed down. Perhaps the players should think of themselves as play testers (?).

Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! The rules are very fluid right now. The goal is to explore the concept and discover what will make the game fun for as many as possible. That's why I call the game a "beta-test" right now.
The 2nd game will have the rules post based on what we figure out in the 1st game and with luck the 3rd game will have a real "official game rules post."

Sounds like a reasonable plan.
I recently participated in an official play test period of a game that may hit the market within a few months. I was sometimes hindered from actual play testing by the fact that the rules had changed so much that I had to reread them a lot to figure out what was going on. There had been quite a few versions of the rules before this stage of the process had been completed.
Pastor Rick's game, thankfully, is not nearly as complex as that game.

Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! Howell's Island: The Case of the Dead Pirate is a game dealing with movement and guessing (or logical deduction if you prefer). I am following a path which was popular back in the 70's where you create small games to test different concepts on movement, growth and combat first before attempting anything like a full game system.

Just about everything doubled in activity as both the players and I became familiar with the rules being created. You might also notice that the games AI increased as well which reflects the rate of posting per day in the game.
All of the original beta-players have signed up for game #2 which should be even more fun than our first game. Join us please, discover a new way to play games that you will never see on the so called "social sites."
Re: The Case of the Dead Pirate! (a unique PBP game) The 2nd beta test of this Play by Post (PBP) message board game has begun. I am hopeful that the first full draft of the PBP game rules for Howell Island: The Case of the Dead Pirate! will be finished before this play-test is completed.
