There is no way to put a password on a thread.
You can create a forum which is password protected, or hid the thread. A hidden thread can only be viewed by admins and mods.

Go to Control Panel> Board Management Panel > Security Management > Advanced Security Settings > Click Fine Tune, On the forum Tab you wish to Password protect
where it says-
Read access:
Select The button that says Require membership
Where it Says-
Write Access:
Select the button that says Require membership
Then where it says-
Membership gaining method:
Select the button that says-
Enter password to gain membership
Then below the button in that empty box put in the Password.
Then click Chamge Security Preferences.
